Who Can Dive?

Scuba diving makes for a fun family activity

Today's modern dive equipment, teaching techniques and understanding of dive medicine enables the majority of people with a basic level of fitness and ability to swim to safely learn to dive.

Whether you're learning as an individual, family or group scuba diving offers opportunities for fun, adventure and making new friends.

Families and Younger Divers

Scuba diving is a great hobby for families to share and can easily be accommodated into a vacation

Many professional scuba dive agencies make key differentiators for environment and depth limits depending upon the divers age. For example PADI have special programs as follows:

  • Age 8/9 yrs - Bubblemaker/PADI Seal Team programs introduce scuba diving and adventures/certifications within the safe confines of large pools or confined water environments
  • Ages 10/11 yrs - Junior Open Water Divers can learn to dive in the open ocean or other suitable environments to a maximum of 40 feet. After certification the diver must be accompanied by a dive professional or certified parental/guardian "buddy"
  • Age 12/13/14 yrs - Junior Divers may advance to the level of Junior Rescue Diver. They may dive to a maximum of 70 feet and train to use Enriched Air and other specialties. Junior divers must always dive with a certified adult diver
  • Age +15 yrs - full diver certifications are achievable
