Full Face Masks

A full face mask is a design that takes both the traditional mask and regulator second stage to be combined into a single unit that allows the wearer to get a unique comfortable fit and 'breath normally' using either their nose or mouth. Combining both devices into one unit is regarded as a significant safety increase for the diver who should become unconscious underwater as the probability of them inhaling water is greatly reduced.

Advances in dive technology and communication devices has allowed companies like Ocean Reef Group to take highly specialized devices used in commercial diving to be available in modular, cost effective and safe unit for the recreational divers.

Who uses a full face mask?

Divers have many different requirements depending on their physical or task needs. The full face mask overcomes many issues faced by different levels of diver:

  • Enhanced comfort: The six straps used to position the mask to the face combined with a large soft rubber skirt allows an almost "one-size-fits-all" paradigm when using the mask. Additional customization within the mask allows for easy equalization, lower risk of mask flooding and use of corrective lenses for those with complex optical prescriptions.
  • Those needing enhanced field of view: Combining both essential scuba devices allows a larger and better positioned field of vision for the diver.
  • Increased communication requirements: The use of build in, modern communication devices, allows the diver to communicate with surface support teams to lead complex dives or simply share the beauty of the dive site with their buddies. Dive instructors can also use a full face mask to provide commentary to regular divers (i.e. those with separate masks and regulators) or surface snorkelers with who are equipped with receive only devices - just like a museum walking tour.
  • Environmental protection: The full face mask and a hood will help divers working in cold or potentially contaminated water a greater level of safety. This total coverage is also appreciated by divers in waters with high levels of jelly fish.
  • People with dental issues: The use of a demand valve allows the diver to breath normally, through their mouth or nose. People with dentures or difficulty biting down on a traditional mouthpiece can therefore use a full face mask to dive in safety or in more comfort.

What You'll Learn

Using a combination of online tools, instructor review and pool session:

  • How to correctly adjust and fit your full face mask
  • Key skills such as breathing and clearing techniques
  • Emergency procedures
  • [Optional] procedures to use underwater communications

An open water session will allow you to use your new skills on the reef.
